The Skeeters Take Home Championship TitleThe Sugar Land Skeeters finished their 2016 baseball season with a win, as the Sugar Land-based team clinched the Atlantic League Championship. The Skeeters took on three-time Atlantic League Professional Baseball champions the Long Island Ducks in the best three-out-of-five series. The team won the first two games on their home turf — Constellation Field in Imperial — then sealed the deal with a three-run rally in the seventh inning of the first game at the Duck’s Bethpage Ballpark, resulting in the Skeeters taking home their first ALPB title. The championship team returned home to a celebration party at Constellation Field included autograph sessions, raffles and chances to take a photo with the championship trophy. The team has garnered a lot of attention since its first appearance in 2012. It is the first Atlantic Team to play outside of the Northeast as the first of a planned western division. It is also the first independent league baseball team in the Greater Houston area since the Houston Buffaloes’ final season in 1961. The Skeeters’ arrival has been credited in part with the impressive growth Sugar Land has been experiencing. Jennifer May, Sugar Land’s Executive Director of Business and Government Affairs, says the team draws about a half million visitors to the park each year and it has become an important part of the local economy. Imperial’s luxury homes are just a short walk or bike ride from Constellation Field. In addition to rousing baseball games, the venue is home to special events such as Country at the Ballpark and the Houston Cheer Showcase. Residents also enjoy promotional nights, including Margarita Mondays and Sunday Fundays. For more information about the Skeeters and Constellation Field, click here. |
